1.0 Scope
Applies to all faculty (full-time and adjunct), deans, administrators, and students.
2.0 Purpose
In order to eliminate any possible conflicts of interest, children, close relatives or a spou of a faculty member are not permitted to enroll in the parent, spouse, or close relative’s class without administrative permission.
3.0 Definitions
3.1 Adjunct Faculty - A temporary, part-time position which is approved to work all or part of any semester. Adjunct faculty positions are not eligible for medical benefits and are limited to teaching a maximum of 12 credits per semester (9 in summer).
3.2 Close Relative - A person would be considered a close relative if they are a parent, grandparent, brother/sister, niece/nephew, aunt/uncle, grandchild, or first cousin of the faculty member who is teaching the class the student wants to enroll in.
3.3 Full-Time Faculty - Faculty who are assigned primarily to instructional responsibilities and who are assigned 30 load points for a 9-month contract, or 33 load points for a 10-month contract, 12 month faculty.
3.4 Spouse - The legally recognized partner of the employee.
4.0 Procedure
4.1 Expectations and Potential Exceptions
In most circumstances, the expectation is that a faculty member’s dependent, spouse or close relative will take a class from another faculty member. In a circumstance where the dependent needs a particular class for their program of study with no other viable alternative class option, and the college has no other full-time faculty member or adjunct faculty member available to teach the class, the student who is a spouse, dependent or close relative can petition to take the class being taught by their family member.
4.2 Petition Process
A. The student is responsible for initiating the process by filling out the “Petition
to Enroll in Course Taught by a Relative” form.
B. The faculty member will forward the form to their respective dean who will
review the information and fair and equal treatment measures that the
faculty member has provided and will indicate on the form:
i. Recommended/Not Recommended
ii. Reason(s)
iii. Signature/Date
C. The dean will share a copy of the form with the student and faculty member
that indicates whether the petition has been approved or not. The dean’s
office will also forward a copy of the form to the vice-president for learning
and student services (VPLSS) so there is a record of the Dean’s final decision
on file with the VPLSS office.
