Entry Deadline: January 31, 2021
A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine intentionally designed to perform a mundane or simple task in a very complicated and indirect way. Typically, the machines consist of a series of simple steps and unrelated devices. The action of one will trigger the start of the next step, and so on, and eventually achieves the final goal.
Qualifications (5 pt.)
- Machines must be composed of a minimum of 20 steps and a maximum of 75, and they must complete their run in under two minutes.
- Submitted videos must be all in one continuous shot showing the entire process, and unedited.
Bonus Challenges (optional):
- (1 pt.) Include all 3 elements (liquid, gas, solid) as part of the machine
- (1 pt.) Include these 6 simple machines somewhere in your design: lever, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, screw and pulley.
- (1 pt.) Final result: flipping a pancake
Challenge #2: Recipe Cook-Off
Entry Deadline: January 31, 2021
Teams will prepare, on-camera, their favorite family recipe.
Qualifications (5 pt.)
- Story line must include a something going missing and being found
- Video cannot exceed 3 minutes
- A hippo must be in the video at some point
- A character should be named “Pontiac Amadeus”
Bonus Challenges (optional):
- (1 pt.) Video includes an evil genius
- (1 pt.) Someone is wearing something red in every shot
- (1 pt.) Include 3 black cats
Challenge #3: Family Film Fun
Entry Deadline: January 31, 2021
Teams produce and edit a short video with a complete story line. Stories will need to include the obscure concepts and requirements noted below but can follow any story line that you develop.
Qualifications (5 pt.)
- Song cannot have explicative words and must be family friendly.
- Video cannot exceed 2 minutes
- Video can be edited
- Song needs to be taken from YouTube’s approved music library located at https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music?nv=1
Bonus Challenges (optional):
- (1 pt.) Coordinating costumes
- (1 pt.) Include a dancing animal
Challenge #4: Family Portrait or Sculpture
Entry Deadline: January 31, 2021
Teams build, paint, or draw their family portrait. Finished piece can be created using any medium.
Qualifications (5 pt.)
- Video should show all sides of the creation and a narrative of its meaning and what it was made of.
- Video should include video of all the actual people that are being represented in the art.
- Video can be edited, but should be no longer than 2 minutes.
Bonus Challenges (optional):
- (1 pt.) Made out of recycled materials
- (1 pt.) Includes someone dressed as a pirate
- (1 pt.) Narrated by the youngest member of the team
Challenge #5: Family Dance Off
Entry Deadline: January 31, 2021
Teams coordinate and record a video of synchronized dancing to a song of their choice.
Qualifications (5 pt.)
- Video should show or explain all steps for preparing the dish.
- Video should include all team members contributing.
- Video can be edited, but should be no longer than 2 minutes.
Bonus Challenges (optional):
- (1 pt.) Story about the origins of the recipe
- (1 pt.) Will include marshmallows in the video at some point
- (1 pt.) Show someone napping
Rules for Qualifications
- There will be four individual competitions feature different challenges. If a team enters more than one competition, the team members do not need to be the same for each entry.
- Score or winning in one challenge will not affect your ranking in another challenge. They are complete separate events and winners will be announced for each challenge.
- Videos must be submitted emailed to ccl@npc.edu no later than 8pm on the date noted for each event – no exceptions. If video is larger than 50 mb, please send link to online YouTube video or video files will be accepted (can be sent via google drive, or wetransfer.com).
- Team should not exceed 10 people.
- Qualified teams must pre-register for each event online HERE
- Points will be awarded to each submission based on 1) meeting qualifying criteria (5 points) 2) votes from community members (0-3 points) and 3) bonus points for including optional challenges into the video submission (1 point for each bonus challenge). The submission with the most points will win a prize.
- Creativity, thinking outside-the-box and ingenuity are highly encouraged.
- All videos will be published on a public forum. You agree by submitting the video that you give your approval to post your video submission and can be viewed by the public.
- No videos showing illegal, discriminatory or inappropriate actions will be allowed or entered into the competition and will be disqualified. Northland Pioneer College reserves the right to disqualify any submission if they feel that it is against the values of the organization. Northland Pioneer College is not responsible for the actions and behaviors of the participants of this activity.
- Any music or imagery that is in the videos must be free from copyright infringement. A free library of music to use is located on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music?nv=1
