SNOWFLAKE — Grab a partner and your leather or soft sole dancing shoes and enroll in either Latin Line or 50’s Swing noncredit dance classes with instructor Katherine Venancio at the Dance Studio, 83 S. Main in Snowflake, on Tuesdays, February 5 through March 5. The classes are offered through Northland Pioneer College’s Community and Corporate Learning Department. Each class costs $40 per person. Students should bring their own partner, if at all possible.
Come dance to a Latin beat, from 5 to 6 p.m. Each week students will be taught steps to a specific choreographed dance that grooves to Latin music. “You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy this fun dance class,” notes Venancio.
Travel back in time to the 1950’s swing era, with lessons from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The class is structured for both individuals or couples. Today, there are many styles of “Swing” dancing to jazz and “big band” sounds, like in the 1920s–50s, and local variations around trends in popular, blues and country-western music. “We’ll explore an overview of step techniques, beginning level patterns, moves and terms,” explains Venancio. Dance floor etiquette and correct dance posture are covered. As students become more comfortable, she uses faster music and more intricate patterns and moves in the class.
For the ladies, Venancio will be teaching a Girls Dance Night class, on Mondays, April 1 to 15, at the NPC Show Low Campus from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Learn the steps to a choreographed number to the popular song, “Uptown Funk.” Enjoy the company of others as we dance the night away! There is a $20 fee for this class.
Venancio has been teaching dance classes for NPC since 1997. “I enjoy the different people I have had the pleasure to meet in my classes.” She recommends wearing loose-fitting clothes. “Come, dance, and learn something new,” she adds.
