Two different levels of yoga classes, designed to increase flexibility, strength and concentration, will begin January 14 at Northland Pioneer College’s Winslow – Little Colorado Campus and Holbrook – Painted Desert Campus. These one-credit classes cost $74 each.
"Meditation practices promote emotional strength and a sense of centeredness and awareness," notes instructor Ann Schmidt. Yoga uses a series of stretching and breathing exercises to promote feelings of relaxation. Schmidt will introduce students to exercise physiology and also interweave the history and philosophy of yoga throughout all of the classes.
Schmidt has been practicing yoga and meditation for over 20 years, and has been teaching for more than 15. She combines strong influences from Anusara yoga with aspects of Viniyoga and other methods to create a teaching style that encourages each individual’s discovery of and alignment with their highest and most authentic self. She has studied with world-renown teachers, such as John Friend, Dona Holleman, Gary Kraftsow and Gurumayi Chidvilisananda.
In the “Beginning Yoga” class, Schmidt introduces beginning poses (asanas), breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques to promote emotional strength and a sense of centeredness and awareness. “The emphasis in the intermediate class is on refining postures, breathing and mediation,” notes Schmidt. More advanced breathing (paranayama) techniques and intermediate level asanas are introduced.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga “sticky” mat and firm blanket. Beginning and Intermediate classes meet at the same time.
