SPRINGERVILLE — Develop your defensive marksmanship and self-defense skills through a one-day noncredit class at Northland Pioneer College’s Springerville/Eagar Center, 940 E. Maricopa St. in Springerville, on Saturday, October 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Self-defense is more than a class – it’s a mindset. Students will learn how to think defensively, assess threats and learn avoidance techniques,” noted NRA-certified instructor Richard Harris, who will be teaching the “Basic Self Defense with a Handgun” course (reference STC 099x). The $75 fee includes range time and a student manual containing all of the techniques and skills learned in the Self-Defense course.
“In the Basic Self-Defense with a Handgun course, students will learn dynamic shooting techniques and develop defensive marksmanship skills,” Harris added. After-action drills will also be practiced. “Students will learn to confidently and effectively use a handgun as a defensive tool to protect their lives and the lives of the people they care about,” concluded Harris.
Harris will also be teaching his Basic NRA Pistol Class for Concealed Weapons Permit class (reference STC 099x) on Saturday, November 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the NPC Springerville/Eagar Center. There is a separate $75 fee, which includes the fingerprint card required by DPS, and provides any required safety equipment and NRA CCW course materials. The course includes firing range certification.
Successful completion of the Basic Pistol course will qualify the student to obtain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permit for an additional fee. It can take up to 60 days to process the DPS permit application. CCW permits are required in most states and national parks.
Participants in either class must be at least 21 years old and bring their unloaded handguns and ammunition rounds, leaving them secured in their vehicles. Students need to bring at least 100 rounds for the self-defense course and 50 rounds for the concealed weapons class. Guns must have holsters. Students are encouraged to bring a snack or lunch. If you want to “get comfortable with a handgun” before purchasing, Harris has several different styles available that you can rent during his class for an additional $10 fee. He also has reasonably-priced ammunition available for purchase.
Sign UpRegister for either handgun safety noncredit class at least four days before the class starts to ensure it is not canceled due to insufficient enrollment.
