WINSLOW — Tomorrow’s greatest medical breakthrough or scientific discovery may be locked inside the brain of a Winslow youngster. Unlock the wonders of scientific discovery on Tuesday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to Noon, when the Northland Pioneer College STEM Experience Van visits the Winslow Public Library, 420 W. Gilmore St., to kick off the summer reading program.
The STEM Experience Van comes packed with hands-on materials that make learning about science, technology, engineering and math fun for all ages. NPC’s team of mad scientists, along with Winslow librarians, will be on hand to guide youngsters in their quest for knowledge. Organizers are planning for over 300 youngsters to participate in the library’s launch of its summer reading program.
“This is a collaborative project between NPC and the Winslow Public Library to expose more kids to the wonders of science,” said Royce Kincanon, NPC’s Community and Corporate Learning Coordinator and chief mad scientist. “NPC utilized a grant from the Science Foundation of Arizona to equip the van with educational tools to encourage STEM studies by K-12 students throughout Northeastern Arizona. We’re available to visit area schools, and when the Winslow Library asked us to help launch their summer reading program, we accepted the opportunity.”
The STEM Experience Van’s visit to the library coincides with NPC’s Kids College program for youngsters ages 6 to 14. “In Winslow this summer, we’re offering 13 different classes, ranging from horsemanship to basic hair and skin care. There are several STEM-related classes, cleverly disguised as Campfire Science Fun; Crack the Code; Crazy Lemonade Science; Crimes and Clues; Junior Architects; Sports Science; and, best of all – The Science of Superpowers,” adds Kincanon. Kids College classes are also being offered in Holbrook, Snowflake/Taylor, Show Low, Springerville/Eagar, St. Johns and Whiteriver.
Parents can learn more about NPC Kids College offerings online by searching for classes closest to you. Kincanon reminds parents to check age requirements before enrolling and paying online. Most classes in Winslow will be at the NPC Little Colorado Campus, 1400 E. Third St.
