About Search
NPC Search Boxes are powered by
Clusty, which doubtless sounds friendlier than
Vivisimo, though they're the same under the hood.
We picked it over various competitors for a few reasons, mainly:
- it's fast,
- it's simple,
- it searches across multiple NPC servers right out of the box, and
- their
privacy and
censorship policies seem remarkably sane.
When using the search, you will be taken off the npc.edu site and out onto clusty.com, and then perhaps yet farther afield onto the big wide web.
As a result, you may encounter advertisements* and even scarier things. NPC is not affiliated with, nor does it endorse any of that. Eventually, we
may be in a position to install and maintain our own closed-loop search engine, but we're not there yet, and it might be awhile before we are.
So in the meantime, Let The Reader Be Aware.
Using search doesn't require any special explanation--it's quite transparent. If you're interested in learning more about search strategies:
- Our Library maintains a good jumping-off point on that subject, among other worthwhile things.
- Clusty itself also has
a brief informative FAQ.
*In particular, note that the first (un-numbered) results you'll see at the top of the page on some searches will be ads for something
less-than-relevant, rather than results for npc.edu or our other domains.
If you run an NPC web page and would like some code to include the search on your page, start with
Clusty's SiteSearch page, or abscond with the example above (in the right sidebar),
or the one below.

Using it will take you off our site, and onto theirs.
