Fire Science (FRS)

Not only is fighting fires dangerous and complex, as a firefighter you are frequently the first emergency personnel at the scene of a traffic accident or medical emergency and may be called upon to treat injuries or perform other vital functions. In addition, some fire fighters work in hazardous materials units that are specially trained for the control, prevention, and cleanup of hazardous materials.

The NPC Fire Science program, through cooperation with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and fire departments throughout the college district, teach you to deal with such situations as well as the use of emergency equipment. You will train at the newly constructed Jake Flake Emergency Services Training Center with its burn tower, flash chamber and 10-acre defensive driving track.

There are three levels of learning available in the Fire Science program:

  1. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) • 64 credits
  2. Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) • 43-50 credits
  3. Certificate of Proficiency (CP) • 19 credits
