It is sometimes the case that citizens take their community college for granted, regarding it as simply the “local college.” At Northland Pioneer College we are working to transform that point of view. The faculty and staff of NPC are enormously proud of the positive impact we have and the benefits we bring to area individuals, businesses, and whole communities.
There's little question that we improve the lives of individuals through the affordable and quality education we offer at so many locations throughout Apache and Navajo Counties. But another, critical component of what NPC does is to establish partnerships and alliances with numerous businesses and agencies and other institutions throughout the region. These relationships lead directly to an enhanced regional workforce by allowing our Business and Industry Training staff to provide customized educational workshops, programs, and training that enhance employee skills and confidence. This, in turn, benefits the communites that rely on the continuing success and efficiency of these enterprises to support their local economies.
In a slightly different vein, the college also is home to the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), an agency whose aim is to increase the number of successful small businesses in both Apache and Navajo Counties. The SBDC accomplishes this through a variety of educational programs, access to business resources, and one-on-one counseling. “Working with small businesses to maximize their success,” is the primary goal of the SBDC.
Community life is hugely enriched by the special learning opportunities NPC offers in an amazingly broad range of subjects. These include courses devoted to equine massage and acupressure, quilting, PhotoShop, stained glass making, aromatherapy, many varieties of dance classes, yoga, gardening, cooking, self defense, sustainable living, even Navajo rug weaving and Apache dollmaking. These special courses are frequently offered as workshops and seminars and in other, short-term formats more amenable to the busy schedules of area residents.
Certainly not least of the contributions NPC makes to improve the lives of area citizens are its cultural events. The White Mountain Campus' Talon Gallery is highly regarded for its juried art shows featuring the amazing array of student talent and creativity. And in Snowflake, numerous musical and dramatic productions are staged at the Silver Creek Campus' Peforming Arts Center, one of the premier facilities of its kind in the entire region. And under the auspices of our music department are special courses and performances created for and by talented local singers and musicians such as the Barbershop Chorus, the Mountain Belles, Big Band, and the White Mountain Symphony. And of special note at our north end campuses in Holbrook and Winslow are the authentic and delightful performances by our Mexican Folklore Dancers.
As seen in this brief outline, Northland Pioneer College offers much that enriches and improves the lives of area residents, and is surely deserving of a title far more than "just the local college;" we're a whole lot more!
