Neal Thompson resigns from NPC Governing Board

Neal Thompson, a member of the Navajo County Community College District Governing Board since June 1984, has announced his resignation from the board, effective April 23.

Neal Thompson
It is with very deep emotions that I submit my resignation from the Board of Trustees of Northland Pioneer College. Due to personal reasons, I find it appropriate to vacate my position, effective April 23, 2008,” wrote Thompson in his letter to board chairman A.T. Sinquah. “I will always have a huge soft spot in my heart for NPC and wish the college only the best of success in every way.”

“I have served on the board for some 24 years and have come to gain a deep appreciation and love for NPC in every respect. I have been privileged to see huge successes in programs, facilities, and student outcomes. I have come to recognize the quality of our faculty and staff and the very important role they play in NPC’s accomplishments,” noted Thompson.

Thompson has worked with six different college presidents, each having made an impact of different degrees upon the college. “I have served with some 15 different board members over the years and have gained a respect for each one,” he wrote.

I only hope after these 24 years of service that I have made a positive contribution to NPC and the communities in Navajo County. I have sincerely tried to represent the taxpayers of the county, who elected me, in a professional and forthright manner, yet recognizing student and employee needs and issues.”

Neal’s expertise in telecommunications, business, health care and NPC history will be sorely missed. On behalf of the thousands of NPC students and employees, I would like to extend a personal thank you to Neal Thompson for his service and dedication to higher education in Navajo and Apache counties,” said NPC President Dr. Jeanne Swarthout.

Thompson represents District 5, which includes the southern precincts of Pinetop and the White Mountain Apache Reservation. His term expires Dec. 31, 2010. Navajo County School Superintendent Linda Morrow will be accepting applications and appointing someone to fill Thompson’s unexpired term until the next general election in November.

Thompson was appointed to the governing board in June 1984, replacing John Potts. He was successfully elected to the remainder of the unexpired term, and was re-elected every term since. He served as President or Chairman of the board in 1988 – 89, and 1993 – 98, and as secretary from 2005 – 07.

His service will be recognized during the governing board’s April regular meeting April 22.
