In the NewsHousing assistance available for students relocating to enroll in NPC programsStudents re-locating to continue their education at Northland Pioneer College may qualify for a new housing assistance scholarship starting this fall. Funding is limited each semester, so students are encouraged to apply early for the assistance program. Many of NPC’s career and technical programs are only offered in selected communities. This requires students to travel long distances or re-locate to enroll in training programs, such as nursing, cosmetology or welding. And for some reservation residents, long drives are required to reach NPC centers or campuses. “The Housing Assistance Scholarship is intended to assist with rent or lease payments, not make the full payment,” noted Mark Vest, vice president of student services. “Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need to applicants who are enrolling as a full-time student, in 12 or more credits.” The scholarship program replaces the college-subsidized housing previously available only in Holbrook. The residence hall or motel housing option was limited to single students with no dependents. “This scholarship opens the door for single parents or couples to re-locate to enroll in NPC career programs. It also means assistance is available for students moving to any NPC community to enroll in our programs,” Vest noted. “Each application will be judged on its own merits, but a reservation resident moving into town from an isolated area for just a few days a week could qualify for assistance.” An application form is available from NPC academic advisors, or can be downloaded from the scholarship link, under Student Services/Financial Aid section of the NPC website. Applicants must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov (NPC School Code 011862), and the NPC Financial Aid Information Form, also available from the scholarship link. NPC offers numerous scholarships and grants to help pay educational expenses. Most students would qualify for federal Pell grants, plus institutional awards are available to help with textbooks, and in some cases, child care. Visit with an academic advisor, or the Financial Aid Office, located at the NPC District Office, 103 N. 1st Ave. in Holbrook, 524-7618, or toll-free 800-266-7845, ext. 7618. Students are encouraged to start the financial aid process now. It can take 3 to 4 weeks for the approval process.
