‘World of Chili Peppers’ workshops

October 21, 2013 by Anonymous

Learn from local gardening guru Kim Howell-Costion how to select, grow and preserve a variety of chili peppers in a noncredit “World of Chili Peppers” workshop at Northland Pioneer College’s Snowflake/Taylor – Silver Creek Campus on Saturday, Oct. 19, or Winslow – Little Colorado Campus on Friday, Oct. 25.

Kim Howell-CostionThis noncredit workshop is part of her popular “World of…” series where “we get to eat the goodies we’ve grown,” Kim says. In each workshop, Kim discusses the culture and history of the foods. She’ll show you how to grow, care for, harvest and preserve their goodness. Kim also treats the class to dishes made from each ingredient. Each workshop costs $32, plus an additional $10 paid directly to the instructor at the door to cover the costs of lunch and seed/starts distributed to students.

In Howell-Costion’s “World of Chili Peppers” workshop you’ll meet the various members of the chili family – from sweet to hot; learn how to prepare the soil for growing; explore ways to start seeds indoors and out; seasonal care; harvesting and curing for storage; seed saving; and, sample and prepare salsas, chili sauces and roasted chilies.

Both workshops meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Snowflake class  (reference AGR 099x-64931) meets in the Learning Center, room 114. The Winslow class (reference AGR 099x-65642) will be in the MultiPurpose Building, room 104.

The last class in this fall’s series is the “World of Garlic” workshop at the Snowflake campus on Saturday, Nov. 9, (reference AGR 099x-65652). She takes students from garden to pantry to garlic cuisine. Kim explains soil preparation; when and how to plant; and the various garlic varieties. Other topics will include seasonal care, harvesting tips, saving seed, storing and preserving methods and garlic braids. Students will taste and experience some quick and easy gourmet uses of garlic.
