TUTORING

The College provides tutoring services for students in most academic areas. This free service is provided through Student Services.

If a student is having difficulties in a particular course, s/he should contact the local Academic Advisor and fill out the request form to receive tutoring help. The Academic Advisor will suggest a suitable tutor, if one is available, from an approved list. In most cases the student is allowed to receive 20 hours of tutoring per class each semester.

VETERANS SERVICES

Northland is approved for the enrollment of veterans, survivors, and dependents under Title 38 of the U.S. Code and selected reservists under Title 10 of the U.S. Code. Veterans Services for Northland are handled by the Veterans Assistant. Contact the Veterans Assistant at 928-536-6241 or 1-800-266-7845, ext. 6241.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility varies under the following basic categories of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Educational Assistance Programs:

  1. Montgomery G.I. Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30);
  2. Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606);
  3. Veterans Educational Assistance Program (LEAP - Chapter 32);
  4. Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 35); or
  5. Vocational Rehabilitation* (Chapter 31).

*Must have prior approval from Veterans Administration. Monthly benefit rate varies by chapter of eligibility. You may view current rates at www.gibill.va.gov/

ADMISSION

The veteran must follow the admission policy for all new students attending Northland.

RESPONSIBILITY
  1. Declare a major course of study and file a written degree plan with the Veterans Assistant;
  2. If transferring from another institution, have all transcripts sent to Northland for evaluation. Contact the Academic Advisor on submitting appropriate paperwork for evaluation of those credits;
  3. Make satisfactory progress toward the degree specified in the veteran's NPC degree plan;
  4. Attend classes pursuant to the College attendance policy;
  5. Inform the Veterans Assistant of credit hour additions or reductions which affect the benefit payment level;
  6. Withdraw formally from classes in which the student no longer is attending and inform the Veterans Assistant of any mitigating circumstances that have affected the student's enrollment;
  7. Remain in good standing at the College;
  8. Understand that failure to earn the required grade point average during any semester that a veteran is on academic probation will result in termination of veteran education benefits under Title 38, U.S. Code;
  9. Make sure copies of official records, student's degree plan and prior credit evaluation are in the NPC Veterans Assistant's office; and
  10. Have all debts with the College cleared by the end of each semester.
STANDARD OF PROGRESS

Veteran recipients are expected to make academic progress toward an eligible program of courses as outlined on their degree plan. Therefore, benefit recipients must:

  1. complete all courses attempted;
  2. maintain a semester and cumulative 2.0 grade point average;
  3. finish all incomplete grades (I's) within one (1) semester;
  4. not receive withdrawals (W's). If there are mitigating circumstances necessitating the withdrawal from school by the veteran student, the student must notify the Veterans Assistant within one (1) week of the withdrawal;
  5. maintain regular classroom attendance; and
  6. complete courses as required on the degree plan.

If the above requirements are not met, the student will be placed on academic probation after a semester of non-compliance. The recipient has the next enrolled semester to attain a "cumulative" 2.0 GPA or be placed on suspension from veterans educational benefits.

The Department of Veteran Affairs that administers veteran educational benefits requires that veteran students make satisfactory progress toward a degree. As a result, Northland, in an effort to eliminate overpayments, requires that all veterans after the 45th calendar day of class, receive a letter grade of A, B, C, D, F or P, unless these students officially withdraw using the Course Change Form signed by the instructor indicating the last day of attendance in the class.

STATUS

The number of semester credit hours in which a veteran must enroll in order to receive benefits is as follows:

  1. 12 credit hours or more=full-time
  2. 9-11 credit hours=3/4 time
  3. 6-8 credit hours=1/2 time
  4. 1-5 credit hours=less than 1/2 time

Students enrolled in less than 1/2 time may be reimbursed for tuition and fees only. Summer school certifications are calculated on an accelerated basis.

STUDENTS MUST REQUEST VA CERTIFICATION EACH SEMESTER.

RESTRICTED STATUS VETERANS

Veteran students who accumulate 55 credit hours will be placed on RESTRICTED STATUS. This means the student will be restricted to those classes necessary to complete his or her degree. When on restricted status, the student will be certified only for courses applying to his/her degree plan. Non-degree courses will not be certified as part of the student's enrollment.

MILITARY SERVICE CREDIT ASSESSMENT

College credit will be awarded, as appropriate, for training at military service schools or for military experience. These credits will be awarded according to the standards established in the American Council of Education guides.
