GENERAL EDUCATION TRANSFER COURSES

General education transfer courses are offered on NPC's video telecourse system and at campus/center locations with sufficient enrollment. The video schedule guarantees selected general education transfer courses over a two-year period during the day and over a four-year period during the evening. These courses are locked-in and will be offered regardless of enrollment. Degree-seeking students will find this schedule, available at campuses and centers, helpful in planning their programs well in advance, particularly in the outlying areas which are served by the video system.

The general education requirements are as follows:

Arizona General Education Curriculum

These courses are listed on page 51. (At least one asterisk (*) course must be chosen in order to meet the 3-credit requirement for Contemporary Global/International or Historical Awareness.)

ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES

Northland supports a varied program of student activities and organizations. All student activities are sponsored by the College and are subject to district-approved policies and procedures. As a result, the College reserves the right to approve or disapprove any student activity. Northland's student activities program invites involvement across a broad spectrum of sponsored programs. The intent is to offer opportunities for cultural, social and educational enrichment for students. Available programs include College governance, special events, educational trips, recreational opportunities, intercollegiate activities, performing arts, publications and special interest clubs.

For College-sponsored out-of-county trips, the following requirements or procedures apply:

  1. Based on legal consideration and space limitations, students under the age of 18 are not eligible.
  2. Students attempting eight (8) credits or more contribute significantly more money to the fund supporting these activities. Therefore, students with less than eight (8) credits are encouraged to participate in local student sponsored activities.
  3. Students who have not participated in funded activities outside Navajo County will be considered first when making selection when space is limited.
MUSIC AND THEATRE

For those students with vocal or instrumental music interest, Northland sponsors a special Swing Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Silver Creek Regional Symphony, White Mountain Big Band and High Country Barbershop Chorus. The choirs and bands perform at many College and community functions throughout the year. The instrumental program consists of a Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band. The Jazz Ensemble performs throughout the state at contests and special events. The Concert Band presents a concert each semester, and it tours in the spring semester.

The Theatre program sponsors two productions a year for students and people in the community. Traditionally, the fall show is a Broadway-style musical. The spring show is usually a traditional stage play, performed in Snowflake. Auditions for the shows are conducted at the beginning of each semester.

HONORARY SOCIETY: PHI THETA KAPPA

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society which is open to students who are committed to academic excellence. Qualified students are asked to apply for membership.

PRESIDENT'S SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The President's Scholars Program provides educational enrichment opportunities and scholarship incentives for academically advanced students. This excellent opportunity includes a one-credit colloquia each semester. Scholars participate in activities to broaden intellectual horizons, become more aware of Southwest history and culture and explore communications skills through interaction with other students. Participants will travel to off-campus locations throughout the Southwest to study subjects of interest and concern. Scholarships, which include tuition, books and travel, are awarded for those who are admitted. Students may obtain an application packet for the President's Scholars program from the Admissions Office, or by calling 928-536-6257 or 1-800-226-7845, ext. 6257.
