If you enjoy working on engines, your interest and mechanical skills coupled with NPC automotive training can open the door to your career in this stable industry. NPC has recently expanded and upgraded its Automotive Technology program including a large, new state-of-the-art “classroom” facility in Show Low. You will find one-on-one instructor guidance and hands-on live training with actual vehicles as well as self-guided computer coursework. Program instruction is based on the industry competency requirements of two national agencies:
- National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
- National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF)
All repairs and tasks follow ASE guidelines that prepare students for national ASE certification in eight areas of repair. Courses are geared to both those who want a career in the automotive repair industry AND those who already work in the field and want to upgrade specific skills.
You will leave the NPC Automotive Technology program-trained and ready for employment!

Why Study Automotive Technology?
Cars are getting more sophisticated and today's auto dealerships and repair facilities want trained workers who can adapt to new technologies and repair techniques. Individuals without formal training and national certification face stiff competition for entry-level employment.
Career Opportunities
There will be steady employment in the auto services industry due to the need for maintenance and repairs as car owners keep vehicles longer than in the past. Added to this is the need to replace retiring mechanics, rapidly changing hybrid-fuel technologies as well as mandates for improved vehicle performance. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual salary for certified mechanics is $35,790 with higher pay for specialized service technicians working for auto dealerships. (May 2010).
Degree/Certificate Options
In addition to preparing students for national ASE exams, NPC offers three levels of educational certification as proof to employers of your skill and commitment in your chosen career field.
- Association of Applied Science (AAS) –
64 credit hours - Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) –
31 credit hours - Certificates of Proficiency (CP) –
7 to 14 credits depending on your area of study (Brake & Transmissions; Drivetrain, Suspension & Steering, HVAC; Electrical Systems, Engine Performance and Engine Repair).
