Lovers and Executioners synopsis: John Strand's adaptation of a 17th-century French classic by Montfleury is a "startlingly modern" tale about attempted murder and a woman's revenge on her husband who believing her to be unfaithful abandoned her on a desert isle to die. But she escapes and three years later returns disguised as a man who becomes a judge. She then promptly brings her husband to trial for the murder of his wife. Calling the play "funny, grim, superb," the Washington Post wrote: "Strand's very free adaptation is like the best comedy, wild yet precise. He's dared to translate Montfleury's 17th-century poetry into 20th-century verse, and the language rollicks along from comic anachronism to melancholy aphorism." Possible roles for 4 men and 3 women. Director: Mike Solomonson. Night Watch synopsis: An outstanding Broadway success, this ingeniously devised thriller builds steadily in menace and suspense until the final, breath-stopping moment. According to the New York Times the play is a "most superior thriller . . . which from its first blood-curdling scream to its last charming surprise is a first-class example of its genre." Elaine Wheeler, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears, paces her Manhattan townhouse. Her husband tries to calm her, but when he steps away for a moment, Elaine screams as she sees (or believes she sees) a dead man's body in the window across the way. A police investigation reveals no body. Is Elaine on the verge of a nervous breakdown or are others close to her plotting against her? Elaine's dilemma and the uncertain motives of those around her contribute to the deepening suspense and mystery of the play as it draws towards its riveting and chilling climax. Possible roles for 5 men and 4 women. Director: Lisa Jayne. |
