NPC schedules truth in taxation, budget hearings, May 20

The Navajo County Community College District Governing Board will conduct Truth in Taxation and budget adoption public hearings on the 2008–09 Northland Pioneer College operating budget and district primary property tax rate on Tuesday, May 20, starting at 11 a.m. (M.S.T.) in the Painted Desert Campus Tiponi Community Center [Community Education Center] Conference Room, 2251 N. Navajo Blvd. in Holbrook.

The proposed budget reflects a decrease in the primary property tax rate from $1.2257 to $1.1719 per $100 net assessed valuation. Under the state’s Truth in Taxation statutes, the rate actually increases from $1.1489 to $1.1719.

The primary property tax for an owner-occupied residence with an assessed valuation of $100,000 would increase $2.30 per year, from $114.89 to $117.19.

Northland’s proposed tax levy is at the maximum allowable under a proposition approved by voters in 2006. The primary property tax levy will generate $10,645,044. The 4.4 percent decrease in the primary tax rate will raise an additional $688,508 in revenue due to new construction and increases in the county valuation estimates. After the public hearings the governing board can decrease or accept the budget from the preliminary figures adopted on April 22.

The secondary tax rate, used to repay voter-approved capital improvement bonds, will decrease by 1.2 cents per $100 valuation. NPC’s total tax rate will drop 4.6 percent from $1.4206 to $1.3548 per $100 valuation.

Interested citizens are encouraged to attend the Truth in Taxation and budget hearings and make comments prior to formal adoption of the budget by the local governing board during a special meeting immediately after the public hearings.

Comments about the budget or proposed primary tax rate increase should be directed to Blaine Hatch, vice president for administrative services, at NPC’s District Offices in Holbrook, 524-7640 or toll-free (800) 266-7845, ext. 7640.
