NPC Music Department presents spring concert
A varied program of classical and contemporary vocal and instrumental selections will be performed by the Northland Pioneer College Music Department during their spring concert, Friday, May 2, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the Snowflake/Taylor – Silver Creek Campus. Admission is $4 in advance, or $6 at the door. NPC students and staff are eligible for a $1 discount.
“This concert will highlight several of our vocalists and student conductor-arranger Stephen Q.G. Mehr, who arranged one of the selections and will be conducting another number,” noted Julie Anna Holtan, NPC’s Music Coordinator.
Opening the concert will be the Northland Master Chorale performing Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, featuring vocalists Judy Staley, Ashleigh Palmer, Cherice Graham, Brittan Pyper and Heather Beaman. Accompanying the choral presentation will be an ensemble from the White Mountain Symphony Orchestra consisting of Theresa A. Bailey, first violin; Annette Bircher, second violin; Ruth Price, viola; Donna Stock, bass; Loline Hathaway, oboe; Alan Beste, bassoon; and Stephen Q.G. Mehr, trumpet.
The Master Chorale will be performing the Gloria with the symphony in a concert Saturday, May 10 at the Show Low School District Auditorium, beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door, or $5 for students.
Also on the program will be So We’ll Go No More A-Roving by Daniel Hughes, Set Me As A Seal by Rene Clausen and arranged by Mehr, Can You Hear Me? by Bob Chilcott and conducted by Mehr, and Ubi Caritas by Paul Halley featuring local percussionists Reid Bjerkan, Tim Budrys and Quessia Hall.
The May 2 concert is the first in a series of free events highlighting NPC performing arts students all beginning at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
Voice lesson students will present a vocal recital on Tuesday, May 6.
This spring a troupe of NPC students has been performing School House Rock, Live! in area schools. A public performance of this musical based on the memorable cartoon series will be Thursday, May 8. The show is free, but advance tickets need to be acquired from the PAC box office, 536-6250.
An Evening of Scene Work will be presented Tuesday, May 13. This program will consist of two monologues and two scenes from Shakespeare and August Wilson, performed and directed by NPC students.

Vocal Ensembles will present their scene recital on Thursday, May 15, to close out the semester’s activities.
